Stallion Service Auction / Breeder's Sweepstakes Program
Check ongoing Sweepstakes here
This program is made up of two phases:
- The El Stallion Service Auction (SSA), whereby members can purchase a mating service from one of the participating stallions for as little as half their fee, and
- Breeder's Sweepstakes Classes (BSC) in which foals derived from matings purchased through SSA are eligible to participate and earn money.
The primary purpose of this program is to provide PFHA members with an opportunity to earn money from their horses. This program also assists members by bringing stallion and mare owners together and providing benefits to both groups.
This program is powered by the generous donation of PFHA members for mating services with their stallions. The PFHA then administers the auction of these services to members who are interested in mating their mares to these stallions. The resulting fees paid by buyers become part of the purse to be paid at the Breeder's Sweepstakes classes , held annually during the Grand National Show . Two Breeder's Sweepstakes classes are offered each year, one for filly and the second for colt and gelding. Only breeding from participating stallions who received offers through SSA are eligible to participate in the Breeder's Sweepstakes classes .
Stallion Service Auction (SSA)
Stallion Service Auction has 3 phases:
- Phase 1 – At the Grand National Show. A table is set up at the Grand National Show (GNS) providing a catalog of available stallions and information about them. A member who is interested in purchasing a mating from a participating stud may open a bid on sheets of paper and fill out the Authorization to Bid form.. This open bidding closes mid-afternoon on the last day of the show. At that point, the highest bidder for the stallion service is the winner, and that service is no longer available to continue bidding. The winning bidders and donors of the stallions, whose services were purchased through this phase, each get a free nomination to one of the BSC classes AND an initial weanling nomination to the Fabulous Futurity program . For more information about this program, visit the PFHA website.
- Phase 2 – Between the closing of the Grand National Show and March 1 of the following year. Mating service for SSA stallions that did not receive offers during the GNS will be available for sale between the close of the previous Phase 1 and March 1 of the following year. The list of available stallions is posted on the PFHA website. Any member interested in mating service with any of these stallions can purchase it for half price or $500, whichever is greater. This can be done by being the first member to submit an Authorization to Bid form with mating payment to the PFHA office that is in charge of the Stallion Service Auction program.no later than March 1 of the following year. Donors of stallions whose services were purchased through this phase will earn a free initial nomination of a weaned foal to the Fabulous Futurity program .
- Phase 3 – From March 2 to March 31. Service stud donors, whose service was not purchased by a member during Phase 1 or 2, may make their stud eligible for that year's program by paying a $200 fee.
A stallion, for which service is purchased during any of the above phases, will be an “eligible stallion” for that year. This means that all foals of the corresponding year will be eligible for the Breeder's Sweepstakes classes described below.
Breeders' Sweepstakes Classes (BSC)
Eligibility
Purchasing a mating with a participating stallion during any of the 3 SSA phases above will entitle all offspring of the stallion to participate in Breeder's Sweepstakes Classes for the SSA year. The stallion donor/owner and the stallion service buyer get a free nomination to one of the BSC classes. All foal owners of an eligible stallion will be eligible to enter BSC, but will need to pay the $200 nomination fee to participate. GNS class fees will always need to be paid to participate.
There is 3 years progress between the Stallion Service Auction year and its corresponding Breeder's Sweepstakes Classes at the Grand National Show . This is due to the following process:
- Year 0 – Year of Stallion Service Auction. . As described above, this begins during the Grand National Show (September) and runs through March of the following year.
- Year 1 – Mating Year. . The mare is bred to the stallion from which the service was purchased through SSA.
- Year 2 – Year of the Foal. . The foals derived from the SSA are born.
- Year 3 – Breeder's Sweepstakes Year. Foals can participate in BSC corresponding to the year of SSA, known as Year 0.
Class Requirements
Breeder's Sweepstakes Classes are Fine Forms classes with specific requirements. Here are the class procedures:
- Participants will enter the arena one by one.
- Each contestant will enter the arena riding towards the judges to be inspected for hereditary traits (mouth or reproductive deformities, etc.)
- The contestant will then ride up and down the Fine board for the judges so they can see any type of lameness.
- The participant will then proceed to the rail and wait for further screening once the participants are present. It is permissible for them to fret while they wait.
- Each contestant will then appear individually for further examination by the judges.
- The participant will be tested while lunging in both directions.
- The contestant will then ride in a straight line away from and towards the judges.
- The participant will then be adapted for the general inspection.
- The participant will line up for positioning.
Breeder's Sweepstakes Classes designations are as follows:
- The trainer must wear plain dress pants (may be official Paso Fino clothing) with a plain colored t-shirt.

- The horse must be equipped with a smooth halter and lead shank at least 8 feet in length. The Colombian halter is acceptable.

Payments for the Class
As described above, the bag for BSC comes from the corresponding year of the SSA. The accumulated total of the SSA, less a 10% administrative fee, will be paid and divided between the two BSC classes proportionally to the number of participants in each. This total will increase for each $200 nomination paid by the participants described above. Each $200 fee will go directly to the class the participant is a part of.
Prize money in each class will be distributed as explained below:
First Place | 30% |
second place | 25% |
Third Place | twenty% |
Fourth Place | 12% |
Fifth Place | 8% |
Sixth Place | 5% |
Of the total as calculated above, 25% will be distributed to the owner of the participant's parent (the SSA stud donor).
