Krisp is a Software/App used for learning, meeting, teaching, youtube... to assure noise filtering that runs on your device. Krisp is able to remove background noise much better than traditional solutions, allowing you to have clear conversations even in busy environments!
Krisp is also a standalone application. You can find out more about this company and their software in particular via their website here.
While you can get significant noise reduction on smartphones thanks to dedicated microphones on opposite ends, desktop and laptop computers often struggle with this. To do this, you need a computer to have a professional meeting, and there's no easy solution to that. We recently found out about Krisp and its noise reduction technology. They claim to offer noise suppression without using special hardware, and in turn, they use Deep Neural Network to eliminate noise from your conversations. We've been testing Krisp on SquadGuide and using it in every meeting to see how it does.

What is Krisp?
Krisp is an AI-powered noise suppression tool for macOS and Windows that eliminates noise in real-time, almost. It supports 600+ apps that can work with Krisp to deliver noise-free audio. The app sits between the hardware (microphone and speaker) and the video conferencing app so that any noise picked up by the microphone is eliminated before being transmitted through the video conferencing app. Krisp does all the processing on your computer so no data leaves your machine, which in turn offers reduced latency. The software package is very simple and you can turn the service on and off with just one button.
Settings
Installing and getting the app up and running is surprisingly quick and easy. Just download the package from the Krisp website and follow the onscreen instructions. Krisp is available for macOS and Windows.
After completing the installation, you will notice that the application does not have an application window because it does not require one. To access the Krisp app, you can go to the menu bar on macOS or the taskbar on Windows and look for the Krisp icon. Once you see it, click on it to open a pop-up menu.
The application has a very simple interface. You only have two options; one to select the speaker and the other to select the microphone source. When initiating a call on your computer, simply toggle the switch to activate the Noise Suppression System.
How to use Krisp?
Say you're on a Skype call with your boss and there's a lot of background noise, just change the audio source from the internal mic to the Krisp mic in Skype's settings to see the magic happen in real-time.
Not only can you reduce noise from your side, but also eliminate noise coming from the other side. For example, if your boss is in a busy cafe, just turn on the ' mute noise ' toggle so the speakers see (hear) the noise reduction in real time.
Krisp works with most video conferencing apps, but you can use it with any app that lets you select an audio source. We tried it with Skype, Slack and even Audacity and it worked fine.
To test things further, We dug up some old dubs with terrible background noise just to see if it could filter out those noises, and to my surprise it eliminated all the noise when We played audio in VLC media player using Krisp as the streaming device. audio.
Test
I set up two tests to see how the Krisp app performed, first, it was a pre-recorded audio sample with built-in noise. The second is a Skype live call with background noise and echo to test the noise reduction system in real-time.
Test 1: Parsing the audio Krisp
The first test involves us sitting in a room with an AC running in the background. We simulated a traffic environment by playing the sound through my phone. Then I recorded the audio sample in uncompressed WAV format. After that, the audio sample was run in Krisp for noise reduction. As you can see (hear), Krisp makes a considerable difference. However, there is a slight distortion in the audio quality, in part due to the re-recording process.
THIS is A LITTLE TEST TO SEE how THE APP WORKS. the result may vary from one divise to another and the type of microphone used. this is A TEST IN A VERY QUIET ROOM, BUT THE AIR CONDITIONER RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND IS LOUD. WE ALSO SIMULATE OTHER BACKGROUND NOISES, SUCH AS TRAFFIC USING THE PHONE, SIMULTANEOUSLY CRUSHING A PLASTIC BAG AND DROPPING PLASTIC CUPS ON THE TABLE. FORTUNATELY, THIS MICROPHONE PICKS UP ALL THE NOISE AND WE WILL TRY TO ELIMINATE THESE SOUNDS USING THE KRISP APP .
Score: 8/10
Test 2: Krisp during a Live Skype Call
We made Skype call and selected the source as Krisp microphone in the settings. Turned the noise cancelling off and on during the call and you can see the difference in the video below. There is a significant loss of noise, but the voice is also impacted. We've found that while Krisp tries to keep the original voice as original as possible, Skype compresses the audio quite a bit, which results in distorted and sometimes even incomprehensible speech. Krisp works well when you have fewer noise sources like your dog barking in the background, construction work outside the house, etc.
A QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS ON THE LAZY DOG.
Score: 7/10
Results
We couldn't upload the uncompressed sound samples which is why the noise reduction in the attached videos doesn't seem revolutionary. When you use Krisp on your own computer, the quality will be much better than what you heard in the videos above. Overall, if we were to assign a score to filtered audio, it would be around 80-90%. We give this score because the noise reduction is done in real-time, the data is processed on the computer and the results are very impressive. However, We feel that there are some noise elements that cause the algorithm to also eat relevant information. You can see (hear) the distortion in the audio in the attached samples.
In the free version of Krisp, you can listen without noise. To talk and listen without noise, you need to upgrade to the premium version that costs $20 a month. Fortunately, there is a 2 week trial of Premium.
Should you use it?
The short answer is yes. Krisp is probably the only software at the moment that offers real-time noise reduction that offers the product for free. It delivers pretty consistent results, which makes it strong competition for any future products that offer the same service. Krisp is free and has no paywall. Krisp is the best option if you want an easy way to have noise-free conversations on your computer.
